“[…] (T)he most miraculous city of Venice, rich in gold but
richer in fame, strong in power but stronger in virtue, built
on both solid marble and the harmony of its citizens, secured
more by the harmony of its citizens than by its surrounding
seas […]”

Prima Venexia
Those who created the most serene Republic
in the ancient time of 421 were at once destined to perish even before the
foreseen submergence of their city by the blue waters of the Adriatic sea. The
guarding power of the surrounding lagoon was not strong enough to withstand the
ever-growing number of invaders, in the eyes of which the Floating city was
nothing more than a ludic place, a theatrical scene, and her inhabitants just a
part of this tragically satirical act.
The spirit of those people, the builders
of an empire laid-out on the unstable ground of marshy islands, resisted the
invasion born from the blind, violent force of the consumerist masses. With
time, this spirit grew stronger, driven by the ignorance of those who entered
the city and, with their cynically consumerist behavior, started to expand their
control on what was so essential for every citizen – the right to dwell.
Once the Cittadini regained the control
over the city, order was restored. The Brain ensured that every single Venetian
had a living place, a home in the centuries-old city fabric. A special
occupation quota was established as a regulation of the number of foreigners
inside the city.
The System followed a specifically
encrypted methodology. The Matrix monitored the urban fabric of the island,
indicating the current occupation level of the buildings. The collected
information was immediately transmitted to the Brain for evaluation. The Brain
and therefore every Venetian knew what was available where. In case a legal
resident needed a new dwelling place, he or she had to connect with the Brain
via a specially designed brain-nerves-stimulating-chip. From their birth or by
joining the Venetian society, every Venetian received a profile, backed up in
the data-cloud of the Brain. Based on this profile, the machine calculated the
most suitable location and housing unit for every citizen. The data received
from the Matrix underwent a filtration process. Once completed, the citizen
received an array of possibilities and was free to choose whichever he or she considered
to be the best fit. In case the citizen was not capable of furnishing the new
home on his or her own, the Matrix would use programmable matter to create the
basic dwelling equipment.
The program algorithm of
the System was based on the once practiced House-Squatting-Phenomenon which salvaged
a lot of Venetians from the Exodus to the mainland. In the beginning, the
frequency of calculations was extremely high due to the great expansion of the
threat. With time, the recurrence gradually went down. The city was healing.
The System became an indicator of the soundness of the city organism.
