Building Collage is a project which explores the moment when formality and informality meet and create incidental sequences, spaces lying somewhere in between. The experiment searched for ways to ‘provoke’, to some extent, the emergence of such moments. Through careful observation of the surroundings as a whole, specific architectural elements were selected and translated into a mechanism of exploration. The unified architectural language of Pendrecht allowed the harmonious materialisation of these moments.

The function of the designed extension of the existing building as a dance school evolved over time as the newly unfolding space was explored and thoughts were given to a purpose that would best resonate with them. It also raised the idea of creating a special addition to the residential part of the actual structure, where two units meet and coexist and where the transition between the two happens in a harmonious fashion.

The building's location on the border of the neighbourhood gives an impression as if it marks a boundary between human-made and nature. The new design thus introduces an artificially created forest of brick columns that slowly dissolves to make space for the surrounding trees.
